Bali may be a paradise island, but even in paradise, we can’t escape insects like mosquitoes and other buzzing, biting creatures. These tiny but harmful pests thrive in hot and humid temperatures and can easily be found in outdoor areas with lots of shrubbery, dense vegetation, and undergrowth with pockets of still water where they can lay their eggs.
Despite their painless yet itchy bites, mosquitoes can cause more harm than good. Some types of mosquitoes can transmit diseases that can be painful and even deadly to humans, especially little children. Don’t forget your pets – mosquito bites on dogs and cats can transmit heartworm and hypersensitivity, which causes raw lesions and ulcers on the bite area.
What Is The Most Common Mosquito-Borne Diseases?
Mosquito-borne diseases can be deadly. They can cause immense harm that ranges from headaches to fevers, body aches, feelings of weakness, shortness of breath, and even death. Some of the most common diseases transmitted by mosquitoes here in Bali, Indonesia, would include dengue, malaria, chikungunya, the Zika virus, Japanese Encephalitis, and yellow fever.
Dengue
Data released by the Indonesian Ministry of Health states that in 2022, approximately 1236 people perished from dengue, one of the deadliest mosquito-borne diseases ever – a shocking 75% increase from 705 in 2021. It’s an incredibly painful disease caused by the Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus breed, which is easily spotted via prominent black and white stripes on its body and legs.
Those suffering from dengue would experience immensely high fevers, severe headaches, joint and muscle pains, nausea and vomiting, skin rashes, weakness, loss of appetite, and fatigue.
Malaria
Malaria can be contracted in any country with a hot and tropical climate. The disease is caused by the Plasmodium parasite transmitted by the Anopheles mosquito, which thrives during the wet season. It’s one of the highest causes of death in the world, with an estimated 619,000 deaths in 2021. In Indonesia alone, 415,140 people contracted Malaria in 2022, a 36.29% increase from 2021.
Symptoms of Malaria would include a high fever, chills, cold sweats, and headaches. Symptoms in little children and toddlers would include anaemia and breathing problems or respiratory issues.
Chikungunya
Another mosquito-borne diseases by the infamous dengue mosquito Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus breed with symptoms that mimic dengue fever, including high fevers, severe headaches, joint and muscle pains, chills, weakness, and fatigue. Chikungunya may not be as deadly as dengue, but it is still a painful disease that would require a visit to the doctor and at least a week of bed rest and optimum care.
Yellow Fever
This disease is transmitted by the Aedes and Haemagogus mosquitoes. The patient’s skin would turn yellow and cause organ failure. Symptoms would include a high fever, dark urine, and abdominal pain with vomiting. Bleeding can occur from the mouth, nose, eyes, or stomach. According to the World Health Organisation, half of the patients who enter the toxic phase die within 7–10 days. The good news is, it is now preventable with a vaccine.
Zika Virus
This disease is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, with mild symptoms showing 3–14 days after infection, such as rash, fever, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache, and usually lasting 2–7 days. A Zika virus infection can also cause Guillain-Barré syndrome, neuropathy, and myelitis, particularly in adults and older children.
Japanese Encephalitis (JE)
This is a rare but serious infection resulting from Culex mosquitoes that thrive in rural and agricultural areas near farmlands. Symptoms would include fever, headache, diarrhoea, vomiting, and cramps, and if left untreated, disorientation, coma, and seizures would follow. The Indonesian Ministry of Health states that JE causes inflammation of the brain and can lead to death, especially in small children.
As you can see from the list above, diseases caused by mosquitoes are nothing to joke about. With few to no vaccines available, we need to remain vigilant and aware of the best ways to prevent mosquito-borne diseases.
Ways To Prevent Mosquitoes
What are some of the best ways to prevent mosquito bites for yourself, your customers, and your loved ones? The mainstream solution is to burn mosquito coils or use mosquito spray or fogging, which is harmful to humans when inhaled and is terrible for the environment. Another option is to cover our skin with mosquito repellent, which is not a sustainable, long-term solution. It’s also not good for our bodies to absorb non-organic chemicals on a daily basis.
